What is an AIA learning Unit?

An AIA Learning Unit (LU) is the unit of measurement used by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to quantify continuing education for its members. Essentially, one hour of AIA-approved continuing education earns one LU. AIA Architect and International Associate members are required to complete a certain number of LUs each year, with a specific portion dedicated to HSW (Health, Safety, and Welfare) topics.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

  • What it is: An LU represents the amount of continuing education credit earned for completing an AIA-approved course or program.
  • How it’s earned: One hour of education equals one LU. Breaks or non-working lunches are not considered direct education and therefore don’t count towards earning LUs.
  • AIA Requirements: AIA members (Architects and International Associates) are required to complete a specific number of LUs annually, typically 18, with a significant portion (12) dedicated to HSW topics.
  • Importance: Continuing education is crucial for maintaining and improving professional skills and knowledge, ensuring that architects stay up-to-date on industry standards and best practices.
  • Self-reporting: Members can also self-report learning activities outside of AIA/CES providers, but these are typically only eligible for elective credits, with some exceptions for programs delivered by government agencies or accredited institutions.
