In Massachusetts there is an effort to get a million homes to be all electric by 2030. What is that going to mean, and why does it matter? I found Ben Butterworth in a Boston Globe article about electrification of Massachusetts houses from August 2021. He had had some resistance when trying to remove his existing system and I wanted to talk to him about how he achieved his goals.
About our guest:
Ben Butterworth has been working in the clean energy and climate policy space for the past decade and currently serves as the Senior Manager of Climate and Energy Analysis at Acadia Center, based in their Boston office. Acadia Center is a nonprofit advocacy organization whose mission is to advance bold, effective, and equitable clean energy solutions for a livable climate and a stronger, more equitable economy. Ben’s work includes managing and conducting research and analysis in support of Acadia Center’s initiatives and state implementation efforts, on topics including energy efficiency in buildings, electrification of buildings, and the phaseout of the northeast’s reliance on natural gas.
Prior to Acadia Center, Ben was a Senior Associate at the Cadmus Group and a Senior Consultant at DNV. In these two energy-focused consulting roles, Ben worked with a diverse set of clients – including city, county, and state governments, community choice aggregations, and corporations – to develop implementable solutions to complex climate and energy issues. Ben’s interdisciplinary work experience in the climate and energy space has led him to develop technical areas of focus in areas including energy efficiency, renewable energy, thermal decarbonization, and electric vehicles. He also has extensive experience in greenhouse gas quantification, scenario analysis, and policy cost-benefit analysis. Ben holds a Master’s of Environmental Management with a focus on Energy and Climate Policy from the Yale School of the Environment and a BS in Environmental Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
