How do you become AIA?

To become an AIA (American Institute of Architects) member, you first need to become a licensed architect in the U.S. This typically involves earning a professional degree in architecture, accumulating practical experience under the supervision of a licensed architect, and passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Once you’re licensed, you can then join the AIA.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  1. Education:
  • Most states require a professional degree in architecture, such as a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch.).
  • These degrees should be accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB).

  1. Experience:
  • All states require supervised practical experience.
  • This experience is often tracked through the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

  1. Examination:
  • You must pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), which is also administered by NCARB.

  1. Licensure:
  • Once you’ve met the requirements for your specific state (or territory), you’ll be granted a license to practice architecture.
  • Licensure is required to use the title “architect” and practice architecture in that jurisdiction.

  1. AIA Membership:
  • Once you have a U.S. architectural license, you are eligible to become an AIA member.
  • AIA membership demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence and provides access to a network of resources and opportunities.
